A W202 C-class. I saw one with the smaller AMG wheels below and it looked excellent. From what I’ve read though, they weren’t built as well as the older ones, which is a shame. I’ve also never seen a manual one for sale, ever. Oh well, they look good when done right.

I find it hard to believe that they started designing that in 1987, and ended production in 2000.

Holy crap that's a while. It does sound like old school Mercedes though

What do you want to know?

Are they noticeably worse quality than W201s? Like would I be asking for trouble to get one over one of the 80s mercs? Being quite hypothetical, I haven’t even really thought about them until today

I would say a 202 would be better to live with. 201 and 124 cars are starting to see more age related stuff because they’re ~30 years old now. And to make matters worse very few people want to work on them and even fewer know how.

202's are mostly OBD2, which makes them easy. 96 or newer is best because you won’t have wiring harness issues. The old straight 6 M104 is fantastic except for head gaskets, but they’re not Subaru common. The M111 4 cylinder is great except for head gaskets again, but those are much rarer than the 104 even. The supercharged ones will likely need a new supercharger at some point over 150k because the snout bearing wears out and gets noisy. The V6 M112 and V8 M113 (C43 AMG) are awesome, and pretty much only have issues with crank sensors on occasion and valve cover gaskets leaking. I own three M113's currently if that tells you anything.Other rubber things like bushings, motor mounts, and flex discs start getting cracked and torn close to 200k.

It’s rare for them to break down and leave you stranded and they mostly experience the same types of issues at high miles that pretty much all cars do. The feel of the build quality isn’t amazing, but in reality it’s fine. The handling is nowhere near an E36, but it’s still miles ahead of a lot of other cars.

They’re not without they’re problems, but they’re simple, very rarely catastrophic, and relatively cheap. It would be a great platform to get better at working on cars yourself if that’s something you want to do. The main thing is to stay on top of maintenance, mainly oil changes and trans services.

This is awesome information, thanks! I haven’t done much looking into them, just gathered the impression that they were lower quality from random parts of the internet. A C43 would be a fun thing....maybe time to add these to my usual craigslist searches

I’ve found that the internet likes to greatly exaggerate things and often doesn’t have a clue what it’s rambling about.

C43's are fun, 300hp RWD, very reliable. Upgraded seats with pneumatic bits for extra comfort. Great little car, just hard to find. I’ve seen a few well over 200k with nothing but rubber parts having been replaced.

That is an accurate statement.

I found one, a wagon too.

Some of the pictures are two years old, which is weird. Also I can’t afford it. But it’s cool!

Oh I briefly thought about importing that exact one! Sedans are much cheaper though.
